Establishing a Common Strategy for the sustainable development of small towns in the Alps

The AlpCity network was formed because the Regions and local bodies which make it up became aware that the sustainable development of small towns in the Alps was a problem that they all shared. The network's aim is to cooperate in the co-development of a Common Strategy, in accordance with the Alpine Convention, in order to resolve this problem as efficiently as possible.

With this aim the network of Regions and local bodies which make up AlpCity has decided to establish a REGIONAL URBAN OBSERVATORY (AlpCityRUO) in order to monitor progress in the realisation of the Common Strategy, evaluate local urban conditions and current trends, and promote the spread and transfer of Best Practices in order to successfully implement the Common Strategy.

AlpCityRUO is part of the global network of Urban Observatories promoted by the UN-HABITAT agency as local branches of the Global Urban Observatory (GUO), which was established with the aim of monitoring and evaluating urban conditions and tendencies on a global level.

AlpCityRUO is a transnational network of Local Urban Observatories which oversees Regions in the Alpine area. Membership is open to all local bodies desiring to contribute to the spread of the Common Strategy for the sustainable development of small towns in the Alps.

Functions of AlpCityRUO
  • Monitoring and reporting the condition of the towns in the AlpCity network, the degree of implementation of the Common Strategy and the application of the Alpine Convention.
  • Promoting the circulation of Best Practices and sharing lessons learned.
  • Promoting the circulation of theories, methods and techniques which serve to develop the skills needed to reinforce the Common Strategy.
  • Contributing to awareness of the situations of towns in the Alps.
  • Establishment and circulation of a system of common indicators to assess the performance of local policies relating to the Common Strategy.
  • Contributing to the unification of local information systems belonging to the component organisations of the AlpCity Network, in order to facilitate the direct exchange of information.
  • Contributing to the development of the European Union's apposite strategy on the urban environment.
  • Contributing to the development of the Urban Observatories of UN-HABITAT in Europe.
